Build a foundation for lasting recovery

Why Do Some People Become Addicted to Alcohol While Others Don’t?

Alcohol has been a part of our culture for thousands of years. It is served at meals, during religious ceremonies, celebrations, and funerals and is the mainstay of all social events. Still, the only reason people want to drink alcohol is to change how they feel. It is how people become comfortable with others when socializing, getting through stress from work or other emotional situations, and how many people cope with life. The effects of alcohol are why people drink it. It lowers heart rate, causes relaxation, increases happiness, and helps people to forget how they were feeling before they took a drink.  According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH):

85.6 percent of people ages 18 and older reported that they drank alcohol at some point in their lifetime. (NIAAA)

Why Do Some People Become Addicted to Alcohol While Others Don’t?

Does Alcohol Addictiveness Arise in Some People But Not Others?

There are fewer people in the world who struggle with how much they drink versus not. However, some people end up alcoholics, and others don’t because the influencers that cause alcoholism must be present for someone to be at risk of developing drinking problems. The research that has been established about the causes of alcoholism is based on science and can be verified medically. People who become alcoholics have a disease of the brain and emotions that change their behaviors.

Understanding the Disease of Alcoholism

Alcoholism is no longer considered a moral failing or only happens to poor people or specific races. Alcoholism affects more people than any other addiction after nicotine. Lawyers, politicians, mechanics, actors, postal workers, doctors, students, men,  women, of any profession or background can become alcoholics. The good news is that more and more people are entering recovery for alcoholism than in the past, and most of them got sober because of a professional alcohol treatment program.  An estimated 22 million Americans— are in recovery from addictions such as alcohol use disorder.

Influencers That Cause Alcoholism

Four categories can predispose a person to become an alcoholic at some point in their life. If you or someone you love has any risk factors, the safest way to prevent becoming an alcoholic is never to drink. The influencers include:

  • History of Traumatic experiences, physical or sexual abuse, and neglect
  • Genetic Link ( family history of alcoholism)
  • Environmental Influence ( presence of alcohol abuse in the home or environment)
  • Diagnosed or Undiagnosed mental or emotional health disorders

What Does Current Research Explain About Alcoholism?

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism states the most effective treatment methods for alcoholism, now identified as Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD):

Several evidence-based treatment approaches are available for AUD. One size does not fit all, and a treatment approach that may work for one person may not work for another. Treatment can be outpatient and inpatient and be provided by specialty programs, therapists, and doctors. Behavioral therapies can also help people develop skills to avoid and overcome triggers, such as stress, that might lead to drinking. Medications also can help deter drinking during times when individuals may be at greater risk of relapse (e.g., divorce, death of a family member). (NIAAA
