Overcoming the Fear of Always Being Sober
Getting sober is hard for several reasons. When you get sober you have to learn how to live a life without drugs or alcohol, which means several things. First of all, you have to learn how to get and remain comfortable in your skin. Social interactions might seem awkward and forced at first – eventually, you will start to gain more self-confidence and you will be able to look people in the eye and converse authentically. Secondly, you have to learn how to function at a basic human level. It is not uncommon for men and women who struggle with addiction to lose the ability to take care of their basic needs. You will need to learn how to get and hold down a job to support yourself, how to feed yourself, how to keep up with personal hygiene, and keep your house or apartment clean and tidy. You will have to learn how to pay bills on time and how to work towards your long-term goals. It’s all difficult – at first. But it gets easier.
One of the predominant reasons why getting sober is hard is because most people who get sober initially don’t want to. They are afraid of what that means. They are afraid that if they do get sober they will lose the ability to have fun. They might be afraid that if they get sober they will have to face all of the things we mentioned previously – social interaction, getting a job, being fiscally responsible – these things can be intimidating. But for many people, the most intimidating thing of all about getting sober is a life completely free from drugs and alcohol.
Overcome the Fear of Eternal Sobriety
The fear of sobriety is a very real thing. I remember when I first got sober, I was concerned about giving up drugs and alcohol forever. The word forever held a great deal of weight. That meant that no matter what, no matter what I was going through, how bored I was, or how I was feeling, I had to completely abstain. Completely?! Not one drink, not one hit?
How was that possible? I was afraid of sobriety because I was afraid that I was going to be boring and dull – that no one would like me anymore. Turns out, no one liked me before I got sober. Once I did get sober (and once I stayed sober for several years) I realized that I was truly becoming the best version of myself.
I was financially independent. I was holding down a job – my dream job. I was the life of the party (for the first time). Everything was great. My fear of being sober finally dissipated, and it seemed like the only way of life that made sense for me. How did I overcome the fear of being sober? Long story short – I simply stayed sober. The best way to overcome fear is to walk through it. If you are afraid of always being sober, simply stay sober and you will quickly realize that it isn’t all that bad.
