Understanding Personality Disorders

Under current guidelines, there are ten recognized personality disorders. These conditions belong to clusters A, B, and C.

Cluster A conditions are:

  • Paranoid personality disorder
  • Schizoid personality disorder
  • Schizotypal personality disorder

Cluster B conditions are:

  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Antisocial personality disorder
  • Narcissistic personality disorder
  • Histrionic personality disorder

Cluster C conditions are:

  • Avoidant personality disorder
  • Dependent personality disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder

While each disorder is unique, it also shares some similarities with others in its cluster. For example, Cluster A conditions produce peculiar thoughts and behaviors. Cluster B disorders involve unpredictable, excessively emotional, or dramatic behaviors. Cluster C conditions are marked by fear-based and anxious thoughts and behaviors.

Most personality disorders develop in older teens or young adults, though symptoms may emerge earlier or later in life.

Getting Diagnosed in a Personality Disorder Treatment Program

How can you tell if you or your loved one has a personality disorder? Diagnosis is available at a personality disorder treatment center.

When making a diagnosis, doctors follow specific criteria:
Your personality must differ significantly from social norms.
It must cause distress or make daily functioning difficult.
It must have a long-term impact.

This impact must affect at least two of four key areas:

  • Emotional responses
  • Thoughts about yourself and others
  • How you relate to people
  • Behavioral control

A doctor will evaluate these areas to determine the type of disorder you have and develop a treatment plan suited to your needs.

Recovery Options at a Personality Disorder Treatment Center

The primary treatment for personality disorders is therapy. The most effective, evidence-based options include:

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Psychodynamic Therapy
  • Group Therapy

Medication is not the primary form of treatment for personality disorders. However, it can be helpful in managing specific symptoms. The most effective care plans are customized, well-coordinated, and involve a team of mental health professionals.
